Dear all,
Om Namah.
Salutations to Dev, Shastra and Guru.
Today is the day of Uttam Satya Dharma.
Before we discuss it, we should look back over the efforts of the past four days. Let us begin with an example, which I have taken from the discourses of the revered munis. A farmer who wants to grow a crop first knows the right time: after the rains, when the soil is moist and ploughing is easy. Before sowing, he clears his field of old rubbish and ploughs it, making the ground fit for seed, and only then sows. After that, with the warmth of the sun at the right time, rain at the right time, and the labour of proper care, the crop is ready. In the same way, before the seeker who practises dharma takes into the soul the dharmas of the highest virtues, the old dirt within it must first be cleared: the dirt of anger, pride, deceit and greed. By taking up Uttam Kshama (equanimity), Uttam Mardav (humility), Uttam Arjav (simplicity) and Uttam Shauch (purity, spotlessness), the seeker has made the soul fit to hold those virtuous dharmas. Now the soul has become fit to take up Satya and the dharmas that follow. This is a pause along the way.
Now we will discuss Uttam Satya Dharma.
The next practice of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva is Uttam Satya Dharma, the symbol of complete rightness, clarity and sincerity in the soul’s speech, thought and conduct. This dharma is not only the practice of speaking the truth, but the process of living the truth, in which the soul is wholly honest about its own nature, purpose and path.
The Word “Satya” in Scripture and Literature
The word satya comes from the Sanskrit root sat, meaning that which is, that which exists, that which is real.
In the Tattvartha Sutra (9/6), Acharya Umaswami says:
“सत्यं यथाभूतवचनम्” (satyam yathabhutavachanam): to say a thing as it is, is truth.
The Rajavartika makes it clear:
“Truth must be not only in speech, but also in the mind and the body”: that is, Satya Dharma is not limited to speaking, but is a sense of rightness in the whole of life.
The Vijayodaya commentary on the Bhagavati Aradhana says:
“Satya Dharma is the ornament of the soul’s speech, which frees it from delusion and confusion.”
The Importance of Satya Dharma in the Jain Agamas
In Jain philosophy, Satya Dharma holds a very important place among the vows and the dharmas of conduct.
The Uttaradhyayana Sutra says:
“सत्यं हि धर्मस्य मूलम्” (satyam hi dharmasya mulam): truth is the root of dharma.
In the Acharanga Sutra, the words of the Tirthankaras are called “the speech of truth” (satyavani): always beneficial, fitting to the moment, and non-violent. The Dravyasangraha describes truth as the natural tendency of the soul, which leads it away from false belief (mithyatva) toward right belief (samyaktva).
The Place of Satya Dharma in Das Lakshan Dharma Parva
Uttam Satya Dharma is observed on the fifth day of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva.
This day inspires the seeker to look within: Is my speech true to what is? Is what I say beneficial, non-violent and fitting to the moment?
The aim of the festival is:
- purity of speech
- clarity of thought
- rightness of conduct
It is the practice of freeing the soul from delusion, falsehood and deceit.
The Spiritual Side of Satya Dharma
Satya Dharma shows the state of the soul in which there is no doubleness.
This dharma connects the soul to its original nature, sat.
When the soul lives the truth, it is freed from attachment (moha), delusion and false belief.
The Jnanarnava says:
“Satya Dharma leads the soul toward right faith, and right faith is the door to liberation.”
Satya Dharma in Everyday Life
In today’s age, when deceit, confusion and exaggeration in speech have become common, Satya Dharma is a moral revolution.
It teaches us that true dharma is that which is real: which is beneficial, which is non-violent.
Speaking the truth is not only morality; it is a practice of the soul.
One who follows Satya Dharma does not mislead others, nor themselves.
How to Practice Satya Dharma
On the fifth day of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva, the seeker should:
- test the purity of their speech
- stay away from falsehood, deceit and exaggeration
- not only speak the truth, but live it
- recognise the reality of the soul
This practice returns the soul to its original nature, sat.
Conclusion: Satya Dharma, the Right Speech of the Soul
Satya Dharma is the state of the soul in which there is no delusion.
This dharma teaches us that the path to liberation passes through reality, where there is rightness in thought, speech and action.
As the Sarvarthasiddhi says:
“Without Satya Dharma the soul’s course becomes false, and reality alone gives it right belief.”
