Dear all,
Om Namah.
Salutations to Dev, Shastra and Guru.
Today is the day of Uttam Shauch Dharma.
The next practice of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva is Uttam Shauch Dharma, the process of freeing the soul from greed, possessiveness and attachment to the pleasures of the senses. This dharma is not merely outward cleanliness but the symbol of inner purity, in which the soul becomes pure by washing away the impurities within it, such as the tendencies of greed, craving and accumulation.
The Word “Shauch” in Scripture and Literature
The word shauch comes from the Sanskrit root shuch, meaning purity, holiness, spotlessness.
In the Sarvarthasiddhi (6/13/331/4), Acharya Umaswami says:
“लोभप्रकाराणामुपरमः शौचम्” (lobhaprakaranam uparamah shaucham): giving up the forms of greed is shauch.
The Rajavartika (9/6/5/595/28) makes it clear:
“प्रकर्षप्राप्तलोभान्निवृत्तिः शौचम्” (prakarshapraptalobhan nivrittih shaucham): turning away from intense greed is Shauch Dharma.
The Vijayodaya commentary on the Bhagavati Aradhana says:
“द्रव्येषु ममेदं भावमूलो व्यसनोपनिपातः सकल इति ततः परित्यागो लाघवं”: the feeling “this is mine” towards wealth and possessions is the root of all troubles, and giving it up is Shauch Dharma.
The Importance of Shauch Dharma in the Jain Agamas
In Jain philosophy, Shauch Dharma is considered the means of the soul’s inner purification.
The Tattvasara (5/16–17) says:
“चतुर्विधस्य लोभस्य निवृत्तिः शौचमुच्यते” (chaturvidhasya lobhasya nivrittih shauchamuchyate): turning away from greed for things enjoyed once (bhoga), for things enjoyed again and again (upabhoga), for life, and for the objects of the senses is called shauch.
The Kartikeyanupreksha (verse 397) describes it:
“One who washes away the dirt of greed with the water of equanimity and contentment has a spotless Shauch Dharma.”
The Padmanandi Panchavimshatika (verses 93–94) says:
“The mind that does not long for another’s wealth or another’s wife, and is free from harming the six kinds of living beings, holds Uttam Shauch Dharma.”
The Place of Shauch Dharma in Das Lakshan Dharma Parva
On the fourth day of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva, Uttam Shauch Dharma is worshipped.
This day inspires the seeker to look within: Am I free from greed? Are there tendencies of possessiveness, accumulation and attachment to the senses within me?
The purpose of this Shauch Dharma is:
- to give up inner impurity
- to establish contentment and equanimity
- to experience the purity of the soul
It is an invitation for the soul to return to its original purity.
The Spiritual Side of Shauch Dharma
Shauch Dharma is not just an outward bath; it is the process of washing away the impurity within the soul.
The Padmanandi Panchavimshatika (verse 95) says:
“Bathing at the Ganga and other places of pilgrimage does not bring Shauch Dharma if the mind is soiled by false belief (mithyatva) and greed.”
The Gyanarnava calls shauch the door to the soul’s purity, where the tendencies of greed, craving and accumulation come to an end.
Shauch Dharma in Everyday Life
In today’s age, when accumulation, consumption and materialism have become the center of life, Shauch Dharma is a spiritual revolution.
It teaches us that true dharma is that which is pure from within, where the soul is free from greed and possessiveness.
A person who practices Shauch Dharma lives in contentment.
They give priority to the purity of the soul, not to material wealth.
How to Practice Shauch Dharma
On the fourth day of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva, the seeker should:
- examine their tendencies toward greed
- give up the feeling of possessiveness and accumulation
- hold on to contentment and equanimity
- experience the purity of the soul
This practice returns the soul to its original nature: purity.
Conclusion: Shauch Dharma, the Festival of the Soul’s Purity
Shauch Dharma is the state of the soul in which there is no impurity.
This dharma teaches us that the road to liberation passes through purity, where greed, possessiveness and attachment to the senses are given up.
As the Rajavartika says:
“Without Shauch Dharma the soul remains soiled, and purity alone leads it toward liberation.”
Holding Shauch Dharma is the way to become free of the kashaya of greed (lobha).
