Dear all,
Om Namah.
Salutations to Dev, Shastra and Guru.
First a small clarification. In yesterday’s table gathering the ten dharmas, the last line of each entry is the fault that the dharma removes: the fault has to be cleared before the dharma can be established. In the entry for Uttam Kshama, for instance, the last line is anger, so anger must first be removed and only then is Uttam Kshama Dharma taken up. So be it.
Now we will discuss Ratnatraya Dharma.
Before going into it in detail, let me write a short introduction. A word carries many meanings in many contexts. One meaning of the word dharma is a quality: heat, for example, is the natural quality of fire, and so it is fire’s dharma. Whether that quality is a virtue or a fault is another matter; good and bad depend on the point of view. In the case of Das Lakshan Dharma we saw that those ten qualities are virtues, and so are worth holding in the soul. Now we will see in what sense the word dharma is used in Ratnatraya Dharma, and what it means.
In the world we know well enough what is called a precious jewel: those pieces of stone which can be set in ornaments and make the body look more beautiful and pleasing. Their worth lies in being rare, and in adding to what the eye finds beautiful when they are worn; that is all their value, and they have no other particular use. But if we were to find a jewel that was like nectar and granted us deathlessness, what could compare with its greatness? What I mean here is the jewel of right faith (samyak darshan). The soul that gains the true jewel of right faith, and the seeker who rises to kshayik samyak darshan, will slowly attain that deathlessness, and be released for ever from the round of death, birth and death. Once true right faith is gained, right knowledge and right conduct follow as its natural outcome. There is therefore no other jewel like the jewel of right faith. It is this Ratnatraya Dharma that is honoured from the thirteenth to the fifteenth day of the bright half of Bhadrapada. Now we will discuss it in detail.
In the Jain tradition of practice there are festivals that are tied not merely to dates but to the depths of the soul. They invite the soul to return to its own nature. One of them is Ratnatraya Parva, which bathes the soul in the confluence of right faith, right knowledge and right conduct, and sets it firmly on the path to liberation. This festival is not only worship, not only a vow, not only a feeling: it is the soul’s journey through the three jewels.
This festival too comes three times a year, in the bright half of Bhadrapada, Paush and Vaishakh. Each time it runs from Trayodashi to the full moon, and its practice lasts three days: Trayodashi, Chaturdashi and Purnima. This is not merely custom, but a threefold purification of the soul. The festival is as wide-reaching as Das Lakshan Dharma, but its direction is inward, where the soul sees itself, understands itself and works upon itself.
When the seeker wakes his inner self in the light of Trayodashi, he does not merely light a lamp: he puts out the ignorance within. He does not merely offer a flower: he offers up the faults within. He does not merely recite a mantra: he listens to the sound of the soul. Trayodashi is the day of honouring right faith. It is the moment when the soul steps out of the shadows of false belief into the light of faith. The seeker recognises the confusion within him, gives it up, and accepts the true nature of Bhagwan Jinendra. He says: “O Jinendra, now I want faith, not confusion. Now I want light, not darkness. Now I want the soul, not the outward.” On this day lamps are lit, the Jinvani is read, and the soul is turned toward right faith. In the temples there are hymns to right faith, the worship of lamps, and reflection on faith. Those keeping the vow fast, or worship while eating once in the day.
On Chaturdashi the door of knowledge opens for the soul. It is the day of honouring right knowledge, where discernment follows faith. The seeker studies the agamas, listens to discourses, and tries to understand the nature of the soul. He says: “O Jinendra, now I want to know: myself, the world, and liberation. Now I want discernment, not confusion. Now I want meaning, not words.” On this day the Jinvani is recited, the agamas are read, and knowledge is honoured. In the temples there are hymns to knowledge, the worship of scripture, and reflection on discernment. Those keeping the vow stay silent, and turn the soul toward knowledge.
On the full moon comes the soul’s highest state: right conduct. It is a day of restraint, austerity and self-command. After faith and knowledge, conduct is now put to the test. The seeker purifies his conduct, keeps his vows, and holds the passions in check. He says: “O Jinendra, now I want to walk the path that leads to liberation. Now I want to do what makes the soul pure. Now I want to live with restraint, austerity and purity.” On this day there are hymns to conduct, the worship of the vows, and reflection on restraint. Those keeping the vow fast, and give the full-moon day to the soul.
These three days are not merely an order of events: they are the soul’s journey. Faith on Trayodashi, knowledge on Chaturdashi and conduct on the full moon: this order sets the soul firmly on the path to liberation. This festival is not only a method, it is a feeling. It is not only worship, it is the fragrance of the soul.
The scriptural sign of Ratnatraya Parva appears clearly in the Tattvartha Sutra: “सम्यग्दर्शनज्ञानचारित्राणि मोक्षमार्गः” (samyagdarshanajnanacharitrani mokshamargah), right faith, right knowledge and right conduct together are the path to liberation. This sentence is the root of the festival. This sutra is its foundation. This feeling is its soul. The Shravakachar too describes the greatness of these three jewels, where vows, restraint and faith are shown as the way to the soul’s purity.
In the temples the festival is kept grandly. Rows of lamps are arranged, the Jinvani is read, discourses are given, and people worship together. Families keeping the vow hold it in special reverence, and children take part too. This festival is not only a practice: it is an upbringing.
In the collections of Jinvani there are accounts of seekers who attained perfect knowledge by honouring the three jewels. This festival is not only custom: it is history. It is not only a method: it is an experience.
Ratnatraya Parva invites the soul to return to its own nature. It bathes the soul in the confluence of faith, discernment and restraint. It inspires the soul to walk the path of liberation. It inspires the soul to walk the path of becoming the supreme soul.
