Dear all,
Om Namah.
Salutations to Dev, Shastra and Guru.
Today is the day of Uttam Sanyam Dharma.
As I wrote yesterday, here we should look into our inner mind at the Uttam dharmas we have taken up so far, and see what effect our efforts have had on us, and whether they have had any effect at all. If we find that yes, we have prepared ourselves for the journey of taking up the dharmas ahead, that something has awakened within us, and that a curiosity has arisen to know and understand the dharmas to come, then the road ahead will be easy, and we will move forward on the path of dharma. Without that, just as a farmer’s sowing without proper preparation cannot give a good crop, efforts to take up dharma without the first preparation will not be very effective, although we should always keep trying. Here I want to tell you about a very fitting test: the capacity to take up restraint.
Try to take even the smallest vow (niyam). If you can do it, know for certain that you have that capacity. Seen at the spiritual level, we find that this capacity can exist only and only in human beings: neither in any animal, nor in the gods of heaven. That is why the scriptures describe human birth as the rarest and best of the 8.4 million forms of life (84 lakh yoni): in this state the soul can take up restraint and the other dharmas and clear its path to liberation. So be it!
Now let us discuss today’s Uttam Sanyam Dharma.
The Word “Sanyam” in Scripture and Literature
The word sanyam is formed from the Sanskrit root yam, meaning to hold back, to control.
The Tattvartha Sutra (9/6) defines sanyam:
“संयमः इन्द्रियमनोनिग्रहः” (sanyamah indriyamanonigrahah): restraint of the senses and the mind is sanyam.
The Rajavartika (9/6/27/599/19) says:
“तमुतिष्ठिन्तिनिहैव पूज्यते परत्र किमस्ति वाच्यम्”: one who practises restraint is honoured in the world beyond.
The Vijayodaya commentary on the Bhagavati Aradhana describes sanyam as the path that leads the soul toward freedom from attachment (vitaragata).
The Importance of Sanyam Dharma in the Jain Agamas
In Jain philosophy, Sanyam Dharma is called the root of the dharma of conduct (charitra dharma).
The Acharanga Sutra describes sanyam as the foundation of the Tirthankaras’ practice.
The Uttaradhyayana Sutra calls sanyam the means of protecting the soul:
“Sanyam is the armour of the soul, which saves it from the waves of the ocean of worldly existence.”
The Gommatsar Jivakand divides sanyam into two kinds:
- desh sanyam: partial restraint, through partial vows
- sakal sanyam: complete restraint, like that of the munis
The Place of Sanyam Dharma in Das Lakshan Dharma Parva
Uttam Sanyam Dharma is observed on the sixth day of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva.
This day inspires the seeker to look within: Am I caught up in the objects of the senses? Is my mind under control? Is my speech restrained?
The aim of the festival is:
- restraint of the senses
- purity of mind, speech and body
- keeping the vows, the samitis (carefulness in action) and the guptis (guarding of mind, speech and body)
- freeing the soul from lack of restraint
The Spiritual Side of Sanyam Dharma
Sanyam Dharma is not only outward control, but the inner awareness of the soul.
The Panch Sangraha (1/127) says:
“The vows, the samitis, restraint of the passions, and victory over the five senses: this is sanyam.”
The Samansuttam (137) compares sanyam to a tortoise:
“Just as a tortoise draws in its limbs, so the wise person draws in their sins through restraint.”
The Jnanarnava calls sanyam the door to the soul’s steadiness and equanimity.
Sanyam Dharma in Everyday Life
In today’s age, when indulgence, craving and reactiveness have become part of life, Sanyam Dharma is a spiritual revolution.
It teaches us that true dharma is that which is controlled from within, where the senses, the mind and speech are subject to the soul.
- Restraint brings peace to life
- Restraint brings harmony to relationships
- Restraint brings steadiness to the soul
How to Practice Sanyam Dharma
On the sixth day of Das Lakshan Dharma Parva, the seeker should:
- examine the tendencies of the senses
- control the restlessness of the mind
- keep the vows, samitis and guptis
- resolve to free the soul from lack of restraint
This practice returns the soul to its original nature, freedom from attachment (vitaragata).
Conclusion: Sanyam Dharma, the Festival of the Soul’s Awareness
Sanyam Dharma is the state of the soul in which there is no disturbance (vikar).
This dharma teaches us that the path to liberation passes through control, where the senses, the mind and speech are subject to the soul.
As the Sarvarthasiddhi says:
“Without Sanyam Dharma the soul remains unsteady, and control alone leads it toward liberation.”
Restraint brings peace to life
Restraint brings harmony to relationships
Restraint brings steadiness to the soul
